3 Reasons Why You Should Loc Your Hair Now!

3 Reasons Why You Should Make the Leap and
LOC YOUR HAIR!

Some people say dreadlocks but what we truly call them are locs or locks. There is nothing dreadful about wearing locs, it's actually the opposite. Locs help remind us to stay grounded and true to who we are. Now everybody won't agree with that last statement, because some wear them as a fad, but that's ok too! If you have come across this article, I'm assuming your past the "fad" stage and want to genuinely loc your hair (hopefully for an indefinite time). So here are 3 main reasons why you should make the leap and loc your hair now. (Don't have time to read? Check out a quick video explaining why you should loc your hair on Youtube here.)

HEALTHIER

Did you say healthier? Yes, healthier. When you loc your hair, that's it, it's just your hair. You don't need to use a million and one products to get them to stay locked, because that's the magic of your hair. You are no longer using toxic products, and heat on your hair, giving it room to grow and flourish.

Most women, black and brown women especially, spend millions a dollar a year going to the salon, buying products and we make the beauty industry richer and richer every year. We do this, only for most of us to still struggle with maintaining a healthy scalp, let alone see our hair grow to the lengths that it wants to grow.

Now, don't get me wrong, some people convert to locs, and still use wax products and maybe even heat products (a blow dryer is a heat product) on their hair, but I promise you, you don't need it. A good fresh wash (wet hair/water), oil and the pairing with the never disappointing sun (because it is our biggest blow dryer yet!) will keep your hair twisted, fresh and light!

LESS TIME CONSUMING

How much can you get done in the morning, or on your off days when you don't have to worry about your hair? Probably a lot, if you wake up soon enough. :) Before I began my loc journey, I wore long weave (26' or better) and guess what? I had to maintain that hair. Every morning, I had time set out to do my hair specifically. Re-curl, flatiron, fix the stitch if necessary, fix my edges, the list goes on! I spent at least close to an hour making sure that my hair was supermodel ready before work/school everyday. It didn't matter that I went to the hair salon every two weeks and spent 4 hours or more there to get it done, what matter was that it was right. Can you say growth?

No one should ever have to feel like they need to spend hours getting ready, especially in the hair department. We are all beautiful in the way that The Most High created us to be, so why are we going through so much to change what his perfect brush has already fixed? Claim your time back with locs. One re-twist (depending on hair length) can take 2-4 hours but it can last your for weeks! And all you'll need to do everyday is nothing. (Disclaimer: I do recommend coming up with a bedtime routine to ensure moisture control).

SPIRITUAL

Above all, the biggest benefit to having locs, are the spiritual gift that is associated with locs. For most of us, we are familiar with the story of Samson and his strength from his locs (and if you don't take some time out to get to know The Most High and his word). That simple narrative has so many hidden treasures in it that we may bypass often. Our locs/hair is our spiritual antennas to The Most High and his creations. When you grow your locs, you are deciding to be in your natural form. You are just letting the heavens and its newness reign down and download in you. I can personally say that since I have locked my hair, I know I can feel a deeper connection with The Most High and you too, can have this same relationship.

Take some time out to really reflect on why you want locs, and what they mean to you. Locs require an amount of love, dedication and consistency to see them grow. Research others to see how they feel about their locs, research methods to take care of your locs as holistic as you can, because everything will not work for everybody.

When you have a solid understanding, you will have a definite answer on why and when you should loc your hair.

STAY TRUE TO YOU

To sum, preparing for any new stage in life, whether it be a new job, new friends or yes growing your locs can initiate a lot of questions. Although I would love for everyone to make the leap, think about what you really want. Why do you want to make this change and how and when can it happen?

We must first look within ourselves to determine what it is that we need, and why we need it and how we can get it.

Be blessed, and enjoy your long awaited loc journey!

-With love, Mss Raven
